The world is changing &amp; I always want to give it &amp; people the benefit of the doubt. I have SO much I could say, way more than is appropriate for a comment box. You both know I live with an indie publisher &amp; writer, I have in the past also devoted 9 months of my life planning a 5-week, 16-city, 33-reading, book tour, reading at 90% indie bookstores. (Only the Anarchist bookstore forgot I was coming . . . ). But yes, I think we need to think about different types of reading, different ways ofencountering text, different types of approaches to buying, selling &amp; consuming the written word. There is defniely not a one-size-fits-all to the way people encounter the written word. For me, the most IMPORTANT thing is that the written word (&amp; those who produce it) THRIVES. &amp; that small business owners thrive. . . There is a DIFFERENCE between urban &amp; rural shopping. What I didn&#39;t mention in the original post was the 45-minute drive I had to take to find the product I was looking for. A writer friend--Jenny Boully--asked recently if people (writer people) spent as much money on books as they did on their jeans? It was a GREAT question, with honest answers, that made me stop &amp; think. I buy more of my clothes secondhand than I do my books. I&#39;m not sure what that says. It is an observation. I think what we need to remember is that our environmens affect our lives. Being a recent transplant--from urban to rural--&amp; having also immigrated from one country to another, &amp; also traveling abroad fairly regularly to see my family &amp; friends, I am always aware of how where you live &amp; what you priortize affects how &amp; what you consume.<br /><br />Okay, must stop. I don't really feel that bad about it, tho, I guess. One apartment we looked at here in L.A. was run by a frenchman of african descent who looked me up and down and said "I guess some white people are okay." I remember one day in Seattle looking out the window of my basement apartment at a young Latina mother with a stroller and wondering if she lived on our block and then, cos of something I'd been reading, wondering if there were any multi-racial couples on our block... at which point my life-mate Zinnia Su got home (who is Chinese-American if she's a day) and I felt a little dumb. I have never been out of the country either (well, Canada once for a few hours) but as for British territory in other people's countries - you can't own space. It's just there. The people who understand this have largely been extincted. I just did something weird to my browser that made it hard to read what I am writing. He went to a dentist to have it. . .what's the best word. . ."darned"? Our insurance did not cover the proper anesthetic so the dentist asked him to "white-knuckle it." He tried thru abt 7-10 minutes of drilling and that was all he could take, he bolted, tooth still broken, sawn but less gory. <BR/><BR/>2) My 1st husband needed his wisdoms out, we were insurance-less teenagers. The dentist advised OTC pain killers since the whole getting knocked-out thing was not within our means. I waited in an adjoining room, heard EVERYTHING, and by the time my guy returned face all puffy blood dripping into a wad of cotton-wool half-in his mouth half-on his beard, I passed out and he had to drive us both home. He was laughing/bleeding the whole time, winking at me pallid on the backseat.<BR/><BR/>Now, as a curiosity, you might be thinking, how many husbands has this chick had?
